Follow-up DM template: what to send after no reply

A good follow-up DM is shorter than the first message, adds one new thing (a reminder, an answer, a tip) and goes once, within Instagram's 24-hour window. Below are templates for each follow-up condition, from "link not clicked" to "no reply", plus the timing rules and how to automate them.

Which follow-up fits which situation?

In SuperProfile, follow-ups can run after a delay, when the link was not clicked, when there is no reply, when the product was or was not bought, or when a lead form was not submitted. Pick the condition first; the words follow from it.

No-reply follow-ups work when the first DM asked something. If the first DM asked nothing, there is nothing to have not replied to; use an after-delay follow-up instead.

What are the timing rules?

On SuperProfile, follow-ups run within 23 hours of the person's message, inside Meta's messaging window. Keep the delay on the first DM plus the follow-up delay under 23 hours in total.
On a comment, follow-ups need the person to tap the button in your opening message first. That tap is the response Meta requires before more messages can go.
On Facebook Messenger, follow-ups are the after-a-delay kind only.
Follow-ups are on paid plans.

Per Meta's private replies documentation (read October 2026), "Follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, and must be sent within 24 hours of the response."

How many follow-ups should you send?

One for most flows. Two only when they do different jobs, for example a link-not-clicked reminder after 3 hours and a bought thank-you. Three nudges about the same link is the point where people mute or block, and a blocked account cannot get your next launch DM either.

What button text and details should you customise?

Button text: on a reminder, repeat the first DM's button ("Get the guide") so people recognise it; on a thank-you, use the next step ("Start lesson 1").
The delay: 2 to 4 hours for freebies, 4 to 6 hours for paid products, always inside 23 hours.
The one new thing: each follow-up should add a reason, an answer or a tip the first DM did not have.
Language: match the first DM. A Hinglish conversation should not switch to formal English in the follow-up.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Repeating the first DM word for word. Add something: an answer, a reason, a tip.
"Just checking in!" with nothing else. Say what you are checking about.
Follow-ups longer than the first DM. Two lines is plenty.
Planning a follow-up for tomorrow evening. It will not send; keep it inside 23 hours.

How do I follow up on Instagram when someone doesn't reply?

Send one short message that makes replying easy, for example "Reply YES and I'll send the details", within 24 hours of their last message. Don't repeat the first message.

Can I send an Instagram follow-up after 24 hours?

Why didn't my follow-up DM send?
