TL;DR
  • If you sell on SuperProfile, Auto-DM keeps the DM, checkout and link-in-bio together; ManyChat suits funnels that also use TikTok, Telegram and WhatsApp; Instagram's own FAQs and Meta Business Suite cover simple replies.
  • Free plans exist at SuperProfile, ManyChat (25 active contacts), Klaviyo and Make; prices were read from official pages on 13 October 2026.
  • Meta allows one private reply per comment within 7 days; a follow-up only after the person replies, within 24 hours. Non-followers get the DM in Requests.
  • Instagram requires automated chats to say so where legally required.

The right Instagram automation tool for DMs depends on what happens after the DM, whether you create in India or anywhere else. If you sell on SuperProfile, SuperProfile Auto-DM keeps the DM, the checkout and the link-in-bio in one place. ManyChat is stronger for funnels that also run on WhatsApp, TikTok or Telegram, and Instagram's own free tools are enough for simple FAQ replies. Below are nine tools and platforms, checked on their official sites on 13 October 2026, with free plans, starting prices and where each one is genuinely the better choice.

Quick picks: which tool fits you

  • You sell courses, products, bookings or paid communities on SuperProfile: SuperProfile Auto-DM.
  • Your funnel spans Instagram plus TikTok, Telegram, WhatsApp or SMS: ManyChat.
  • You only need FAQ replies, an away message or opening hours: Instagram's built-in FAQs and Meta Business Suite Inbox automations.
  • You are an ecommerce brand that already runs email and SMS: Klaviyo.
  • You manage many profiles with approvals: Sprout Social or Hootsuite.
  • You have a developer and want full control: Make or n8n.

Before you commit, check three things. First, the free plan's real limit (one keyword, 25 contacts, 1,000 credits: each shapes a different account). Second, how it charges: by contact, by seat or by execution, then picture a viral Reel. Third, the currency: ManyChat says its price is set by your billing country, so check the checkout if you pay from India.

Free plan or built-in feature: what you get without paying

We build SuperProfile, so weigh our row with that in mind. Every tool below is in the list of nine further down. Read on 13 October 2026, from each tool's official pages:

Free plans

  • SuperProfile Auto-DM: comment-to-DM on Instagram posts and Reels. Each automation listens for one keyword. DMs are text with buttons and end with a short "Sent via SuperProfile" line. The free plan sets no cap on contacts or DMs, but Meta's messaging limits still apply.
  • ManyChat Free: 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels and up to 4 live automations, with a "Powered by Manychat" message on first contact.
  • Klaviyo free plan: social auto-replies, with up to 250 profiles and 500 emails a month. It is built for turning DMs into email and SMS subscribers.
  • Make free plan: 1,000 credits a month, with a 15-minute minimum between scheduled runs. You build the comment-reply logic yourself.

Built into Instagram and Meta (no plan or price listed)

  • Instagram's FAQs: up to four questions with automated answers when someone starts a chat. They don't reply to comments.
  • Meta Business Suite Inbox: instant replies, away messages and FAQs. On desktop, custom keyword replies take up to five keywords or phrases each, and keywords are case-sensitive.

These limits are not comparable units: a keyword, a contact, a profile and a credit each run out differently. Check which one your account would hit first.

What is Instagram DM automation?

It is software that sends a direct message for you when something happens on your account: a comment with a keyword, a Story reply or an incoming DM. The tool handles the first reply, usually a link, a free resource or an answer to a common question.

Is Instagram DM automation allowed? Will I get banned?

Automated chats are allowed when they run on Meta's APIs. Instagram's Help Center says Instagram accounts can use Meta APIs on its Developer Platform to create automated chats. We found no Instagram page that promises a tool can never lead to restrictions, so treat "zero risk" marketing with caution and stay inside the limits below. This list does not cover tools that log in as you instead of using Meta's APIs.

For comment-to-DM, the rules come from Meta's private replies documentation (updated 30 June 2026, read 13 October 2026):

  • One private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. For Instagram Live, only during the broadcast.
  • A follow-up is possible only if the person replies, and it must go out within 24 hours of their reply.
  • If the person follows you, the DM arrives in their Inbox. If not, it goes to their message Requests.

No tool can change these. Separately, Instagram's Help Center says automated chats must tell people they are automated where legally required: at the start of the conversation, after a significant lapse of time, and when a conversation passes from a human back to an automated chat (Automated chats on Instagram). It also lets accounts add the reminder even when it is not required. A short first line such as "This is an automated reply; reply here and a person will follow up" covers it. Rules differ by country, so check where you and your audience are.

How we evaluated these tools

We read each tool's own pricing page, help centre or documentation on 13 October 2026 and recorded the URL for every claim. We did not run hands-on tests of the competitor tools, so what we say about them is what they publish. SuperProfile details come from our own product, and we describe one live production test below. We build SuperProfile, so it is listed first, and we say where others are better. The list covers established platforms and Meta's own tools, not every Instagram tool on the market.

Criteria: Meta API use, triggers, free-tier limits, price and currency, handling comments that miss your keyword, what happens after the DM (follow-ups, email capture, selling), and fit for a creator, brand, team or developer.

The 9 best Instagram DM automation tools in 2026

1. SuperProfile Auto-DM: best if you sell on SuperProfile

What it does: SuperProfile Auto-DM runs on Instagram and Facebook Messenger. Its triggers are comments on Reels and Posts, Story replies, Live comments and direct messages. DM buttons can open one of your published SuperProfile products (payment pages, courses, webinars, 1:1 sessions, Telegram communities, locked content, lead magnets), your store or your referral link. Meta's messaging windows and rules apply to every message.

Meta's official API: Yes, it connects to Instagram through Meta's own login and API.

Free plan: Yes. Auto-DM on Instagram posts and Reels, one keyword per automation, and text-and-button DMs that end with a short "Sent via SuperProfile" line.

Paid plans add: Stories, Lives and incoming-DM triggers, unlimited keywords, any-comment and all-posts triggers, ask-to-follow, email collection, follow-ups, more DM types, Facebook Messenger and more than one Instagram account. Prices: SuperProfile pricing.

Pros

  • Comments that miss your keyword. With "Also reply without your keywords" on, AI reads comments that match no keyword, including typos and Hinglish, and the DM goes out only when it is confident. Keywords are matched first and exclude keywords still block a match. Intent matching and Rewrite are on paid plans.
  • The DM leads to a sale. Ask people to follow before the link, collect an email inside the DM and send it to Kit, Mailchimp or Klaviyo, and run follow-ups when the link was not clicked or there is no reply. These are paid-plan features. Follow-ups run within 23 hours of the person's message.
  • Link click tracking is a toggle on every automation, on by default. Amazon and Flipkart links are always sent as typed, so affiliate commission works.
  • Up to three rotating public comment replies, and a Rewrite button that suggests up to 3 rewordings of your DM, keeping links and variables as written.
  • Set up by asking an assistant: connect Claude or ChatGPT through SuperProfile's MCP server; preparing a change does not publish it.

Cons

  • Instagram and Facebook Messenger only. If your funnel needs WhatsApp, SMS or TikTok in the same flow, ManyChat covers more.
  • The free plan is limited to posts and Reels, one keyword and the "Sent via SuperProfile" line.
  • Intent matching works on Instagram post and Reel comments, not yet Stories, DMs, Lives or Messenger. It sends at most one AI-matched DM per person per automation per day, and sends nothing when the AI is unsure.
SuperProfile Auto-DM call to action: start on the free plan

2. ManyChat: best for multi-channel funnels

What it does: A widely used chat automation platform. Free lets you connect 2 channels from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger and Telegram; WhatsApp, SMS and email are not on Free (ManyChat Free plan). Its example automations include starting a conversation on a post or Reel comment, welcoming new followers, replying to Story responses and answering DMs.

Meta's official API: ManyChat says it is an official Meta Business Partner that works directly with Instagram's official APIs (ManyChat help).

Free plan: Yes. $0 for 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels, up to 4 live automations, with a "Powered by Manychat" message on first contact.

Starting price (pricing page, 13 October 2026, USD): Essential from $14 a month billed annually, 250 active contacts, with a 14-day trial. Pro from $29 a month billed annually, 2,500 active contacts, 3 channels and Manychat AI.

Best for: Funnels across several channels, including WhatsApp. Pros: wider channel support than the Instagram-first tools here, an automation builder with templates, new-follower and giveaway automations. Cons: pricing is by active contacts, so cost grows with the people you interact with, and the Free plan stops at 25.

3. Instagram's built-in FAQs: best free option for simple questions

What it does: Business and creator accounts can show up to four frequently asked questions when someone starts a chat, each with an optional automated response. Turn it on under Messages, Tools, Frequently asked questions, Show Questions (Instagram Help Center).

Meta's official API: Not applicable; it is Instagram's own feature. Free plan: no plan or price is listed; it is part of the app.

Best for: Accounts that get the same few questions: price, shipping, timings. Pros: nothing to install and no third party. Cons: it does not reply to comments, and a tapped question lands in your Requests, which you must accept before replying (Instagram Help Center).

4. Meta Business Suite Inbox automations: best free option for away messages and simple keywords

What it does: Replies to people who message your business across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. Templates include instant reply, away message, FAQs, location, contact information and hours. On desktop you can also set custom keyword replies (up to five keywords or phrases) and a comment-to-message automation for comments with specific hashtags (Meta Help).

Meta's official API: Not applicable; it is Meta's own tool. Free plan: no plan or price is listed on the help page.

Best for: Small accounts that want an instant reply and an away message. Cons: keywords are case-sensitive and must match exactly; a keyword reply is sent after 15 minutes unless you reply first, which is slow for a "send me the link" Reel; keyword and comment automations are desktop only.

5. Klaviyo: best for ecommerce brands already on it

What it does: Its social product turns Instagram DMs, comments and tags into email, SMS and WhatsApp subscribers, with automated replies and flows triggered from comments, tags and DMs (Klaviyo social).

Meta's official API: Not stated on the pages we read. Free plan: yes; Klaviyo's free plan lists social auto-replies, with up to 250 profiles and 500 emails a month (Klaviyo pricing). The social page shows "special introductory pricing" with no number, so we quote no paid price.

Best for: Brands that want Instagram interactions in the same customer profile as email and SMS. Cons: built around capturing subscribers for owned channels, not selling a course or booking inside the DM.

6. Sprout Social: best for teams that need approvals

What it does: A social management suite. Its Bot Builder makes chatbots for Instagram DMs (also X, Facebook and WhatsApp): up to 4 ice breakers on Instagram, text and images with a call-to-action button linking to a URL, quick replies, and handoff to the team in the Smart Inbox (Sprout Bot Builder).

Meta's official API: Not stated on the pages we read. Free plan: none listed; there is a 30-day trial.

Starting price (pricing page, 13 October 2026, USD): Standard at $199 per seat per month on annual billing. A lower Essentials tier is listed at $79 per seat per month ($99 billed monthly). The page does not say which tier includes Bot Builder, so confirm before buying.

Best for: Agencies and brand teams. Cons: per-seat cost far above creator tools, and the pages we read describe ice-breaker chatbots, not keyword comment-to-DM.

7. Hootsuite: best for teams already on a broader social suite

What it does: Its Nest inbox brings comments and DMs from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, X and TikTok into one place, and lets you route conversations and trigger automated responses (Hootsuite Nest). The Professional plan is the first to list "automate inbox replies and workflows".

Meta's official API: Not stated on the pages we read. Free plan: none listed; it offers a 14-day trial.

Price (plans page, 13 October 2026, USD): its FAQ says paid plans start at $99 for Standard and $199 for Professional, up to $399 for Advanced. Paid plans only; see Hootsuite pricing for the exact per-user terms.

Best for: Teams that already publish, report and monitor on Hootsuite. Cons: per-user pricing, and the pages we read describe inbox routing and auto-responses rather than keyword comment-to-DM flows.

8. Make: best no-code builder

What it does: A general automation platform. Its Instagram for Business app (Facebook login) offers triggers like Watch events and Watch media, and lists a template that auto-replies to new Instagram comments (Make Instagram integration).

Free plan: yes, 1,000 credits a month (Make pricing); we could not read paid prices, so we quote none. Best for: DMs that feed a CRM, sheet or AI step. Cons: you build and maintain the logic and the Meta limits yourself, and each action uses credits.

9. n8n: best for developers who self-host

What it does: A workflow tool you can host yourself. A community template, "Automated Instagram comment response with DMs and Google Sheets tracking", watches comments, DMs new commenters and logs them in Google Sheets (n8n template). It also has a Facebook Graph API node.

Pricing: a self-hosted Community Edition is on GitHub (no price stated); the hosted Starter plan is €20 a month billed annually for 2,500 workflow executions, with a trial and no credit card needed (n8n pricing, 13 October 2026). You set up the Meta app and permissions yourself. Cons: no ready-made DM product, so you own setup, hosting and token renewal.

Which triggers does each tool support?

From each tool's official pages, 13 October 2026. "Not stated" means we did not find it on the pages we read.

Trigger SuperProfile Auto-DM ManyChat Instagram built-in tools
Comment on a post or Reel Yes (free plan: one keyword; any-comment and all-posts triggers are paid) Yes Meta Business Suite (desktop): comments with specific hashtags. FAQs: not a trigger
Story reply Yes (paid plans) Yes Not stated
Incoming DM Yes (paid plans) Yes Yes: FAQs, instant reply, away message, keyword replies (desktop)
Live comment Yes (paid plans) Not stated Not stated
Ad comment Not stated Not stated Not stated

Meta's private-reply documentation lists ad posts among the content you can reply to, so ask any vendor whether it triggers on ad comments before you build an ad funnel on it.

Use cases, in short

Comment-to-DM. The Reel that says "comment GUIDE and I'll send it". On 8 October 2026 Vishnu tested SuperProfile's reply-without-keywords setting on production: "bhai guide ka link bhejo na" got a DM in about 3 seconds, "gide link plz" got a DM, and "nice video bro" got none. See how comment-to-DM works and our Instagram DM templates; more are on the SuperProfile guides page.

Click-to-DM ads. Meta's documentation lists ad posts among the comments you can reply to privately; the matrix below shows we could not verify ad comments as a trigger for any of these tools, so ask each vendor.

Giveaways. Treat it as a comment-to-DM with rules: put the rules and entry link in the single allowed first DM, and rotate your public replies. SuperProfile's ask-to-follow is a paid-plan flow; ManyChat has giveaway automations too. Check Instagram's current promotion rules first.

Instagram's free built-ins are enough when you answer the same few questions and do not need to send a link in reply to a comment. They stop being enough for comment-to-DM at volume, Story or Live triggers, fast keyword replies, follow-ups or click tracking.

Build vs buy. Build with n8n or Make if you have a developer or an unusual system to feed. Meta's private-reply guide assumes you have built a Meta login flow and a webhooks server, and you then handle every limit above yourself. Many teams use a ready-made tool for the DM and n8n or Make for what happens after.

How not to sound like a bot. Put the thing they asked for in line one and the link in line two, write in the language your audience uses, vary the public reply, say briefly that it is automated, and answer when people reply.

Beyond DMs. The SuperProfile Instagram scheduler publishes posts through Meta's official publishing API and can attach an Auto-DM to a scheduled photo, carousel or Reel (paid plans, Instagram professional account). Instagram hides comments with common offensive words by default (Instagram Help Center); for rules on spam, links and abuse with Ignore, Hide or Delete, see comment moderation (paid plans).

Tools from older lists that have closed

As of 13 October 2026, jarvee.com says "Jarvee is permanently closed", and mobilemonkey.com now lands on Customers.ai, which presents a Klaviyo identity-resolution product rather than Instagram DM automation. Check that a tool is live before you build on it.

FAQs about Instagram DM automation tools

What is the best Instagram DM automation tool in 2026?

It depends on your use. If you sell on SuperProfile, SuperProfile Auto-DM, because the DM can open your product, course, booking or paid Telegram community on the same platform. For multi-channel funnels that include WhatsApp, ManyChat. For simple FAQ replies, Instagram's built-in tools are enough.

What is Instagram DM automation?

It is software that sends a direct message for you when something happens on your account, such as a comment with a keyword, a Story reply or an incoming DM. It replies to the first message so you do not have to, within Meta's messaging limits.

Is Instagram DM automation allowed? Will I get banned?

Instagram's Help Center says accounts can use Meta APIs to create automated chats, and tools built on those APIs work inside Meta's rules. We found no page that guarantees a tool can never lead to restrictions, so stay within the limits and add a short "this is automated" line where the law requires it.

How much does Instagram DM automation cost?

It ranges from free to hundreds of dollars a month. Free plans exist at SuperProfile, ManyChat (25 active contacts), Klaviyo and Make. ManyChat's paid plans start at $14 a month billed annually, Hootsuite's FAQ says $99 for Standard, and Sprout Social starts at $199 per seat per month for Standard. See SuperProfile pricing for ours; the others were read on 13 October 2026.

Is there a free Instagram auto DM tool or comment bot?

Yes. SuperProfile's free plan includes Auto-DM on Instagram posts and Reels with one keyword per automation and a "Sent via SuperProfile" line. ManyChat's Free plan covers 25 active contacts and 4 live automations. Instagram's FAQs and Meta Business Suite handle simple replies, and our guide to free Instagram auto DM lists what each free plan includes.

What is the best free Instagram automation tool?

It depends on which limit you would hit first. SuperProfile's free plan handles comment-to-DM on posts and Reels with one keyword per automation and no contact cap. ManyChat's free plan allows 25 active contacts and up to 4 live automations across 2 channels. If you only need FAQ answers or an away message, Instagram's built-in FAQs and Meta Business Suite cost nothing. All of them are compared above.

What else can Instagram automation tools do besides DMs?

The main other job is scheduling posts. SuperProfile's Instagram scheduler publishes feed photos, carousels, Reels and Stories through Meta's official publishing API, and it is on paid plans. Scheduled photos, carousels and Reels can also have an Auto-DM attached. Tools that like, follow or comment for you by logging in as you are a different category, and this list doesn't cover them.

Can I schedule a DM on Instagram?

Not as a cold message. Meta allows one private reply to a commenter within 7 days, and a follow-up only after the person replies, within 24 hours. You can delay a follow-up inside that window; SuperProfile follow-ups run within 23 hours of the person's message. To schedule posts, use the Instagram scheduler.

How do I turn on auto DM on Instagram?

Instagram's own settings cover FAQ replies only: go to Messages, Tools, Frequently asked questions, and turn on Show Questions. Comment-to-DM needs a tool: connect your professional account, pick a post or Reel, set a keyword and write the DM. Our guide to Instagram DM automation walks through it.

Why isn't my Instagram DM automation working?

Common causes: the comment is older than 7 days, that comment already got its one private reply, the comment did not match your keyword, or the account is not a professional account. Reconnect the account, then test with a fresh comment from another account. More fixes: Instagram auto DM not working.

What is the difference between a chatbot and DM automation?

DM automation sends a preset message when a trigger happens, like a comment keyword. A chatbot holds a back-and-forth conversation and may use AI for free-text questions. Many tools do both; for delivering a link from a Reel, DM automation is simpler.

Can an auto DM tool message people who commented weeks ago?

No. Meta allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment (Meta).

Can I set up Instagram auto DMs with ChatGPT or Claude?

On SuperProfile, yes. Connect SuperProfile to Claude or ChatGPT through its MCP server, ask for the automation you want, and review the draft before you publish it. Steps are on Instagram Auto-DM with AI assistants.

Final thoughts

Pick the smallest tool that does your job. Instagram's own FAQs cost nothing. When your Reels bring more comments than you can answer, move to a comment-to-DM tool and choose by what happens after the DM. If you sell on SuperProfile, SuperProfile Auto-DM starts on a free plan: sign up and set up your first comment-to-DM.
