“Not everyone can message this account”: what it means

This notice is about the person you are trying to reach, not you. Instagram's Message Requests are restricted to only people they follow or have messaged before — either because they chose that, or because Instagram sets it that way by default for some accounts (such as a Teen Account) — and you are outside that group. The near-identical notice “This account can't receive your message” has the same cause. For an Instagram Auto-DM, that same restriction is one reason some of your automated DMs are refused by Meta before they ever reach an inbox.

What the message means

Instagram's own Direct settings let a person choose who can send them a message request: anyone on Instagram, or only the people they follow — and anyone outside that choice sees a message saying the account does not accept requests from people outside it (Instagram Help: manage who can send you message requests, read 2 November 2026). “Not everyone can message this account” and “This account can't receive your message” are both that setting showing up from the sender's side. It is not a block or a bug, and it is not about your own account — it is the recipient's message-request setting, whether they chose it themselves or it is Instagram's default for their account. Teen Accounts on Instagram in India have the strictest messaging setting on by default, which lets them receive messages only from people they follow or are already connected with — the restriction is not something a teen chose, it is Instagram's default for that account type.

How this shows up in an Instagram Auto-DM

When an automated DM is addressed to someone outside the recipient's allowed audience, Meta's API refuses the send instead of delivering it. SuperProfile's Auto-DM sees the real Meta error code behind that refusal, not just “not sent”:

The first reason is the recipient's own setting — nothing to fix. The second is something you control: a DM that opens with a photo, video or file fails for people who do not follow you yet, while the same automation opening with text (with a button to tap) avoids that specific refusal — it still depends on Meta's other rules and the recipient's own settings, so it is not a guarantee of delivery.

What's normal, and what's worth checking

SuperProfile flags the "recipient's privacy settings block business messages" refusal only when it is above about 2% of an account's send attempts in the window; under that share is normal, not a problem to fix. A handful of commenters having message requests closed is expected on any Instagram account; that 2% is SuperProfile's own diagnostic threshold for this one reason, not a sign of anything you can fix, and it is unrelated to whether your DMs open with media or text (that is a separate, fixable refusal reason, above).

See which of your sends were refused, and why

An AI assistant connected through the SuperProfile MCP server can pull a send-failure report for a connected account (get_autodm_send_failures): which Meta error codes refused sends in the last 7 days, how many, and whether each is something the creator can fix.

Sample data. An AI assistant connected over MCP reading a weekly Auto-DM send-failure breakdown: grouped counts by refusal reason (9 privacy-setting, 6 message-type-refused-for-non-followers, 3 outside the 24-hour messaging window) for the whole account, not a list of individual sends — the 3.8% privacy-block share shown is above SuperProfile's own 2% diagnostic threshold for that one reason, not a general delivery benchmark.

What you can do

Frequently asked questions

Why does Instagram say “not everyone can message this account”?

The account you are messaging has Message Requests restricted to only people they follow or have already messaged, and you are outside that group. It is their setting — either chosen or Instagram's default for their account type — not a problem with your account.

Is “This account can't receive your message” different from “Not everyone can message this account”?

No — both describe the same recipient-side Message Requests restriction blocking the message.

Can I fix this from my own account?

No. The restriction belongs to the person you are messaging. You can ask them to message or follow you first, or reach them another way.

Does this affect my Instagram Auto-DM?

Yes — Meta refuses an automated DM to anyone outside the recipient's allowed audience, the same as a manual DM. A connected AI assistant can pull a weekly breakdown, grouped by Meta's refusal reason, of how many sends were refused and whether each reason is something you can fix.

If my first automated DM is a photo, why does it fail more often?

Meta blocks media (photo, video, audio, file) as a first message to someone who does not follow you, separately from the privacy-request setting. Opening with text and a button, then sending media as a follow-up, avoids that specific refusal.
