Instagram DM limits: what Meta actually allows
Instagram does not publish a daily number for DMs you send by hand in the app. For DMs sent by a tool through Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login, Meta does publish limits per Instagram professional account: 750 private replies an hour to comments on posts and Reels, 100 message calls a second for text, and a 24-hour window to reply after a person messages you. The “200 DMs per hour” figure quoted on many sites is not in Meta's messaging docs.
Is there a daily DM limit on Instagram?
Not one that Instagram publishes. We found no daily number for DMs sent by hand from the app in Instagram's Help Center or Meta's developer docs (checked 6 November 2026), so figures such as “50 to 100 a day” that circulate online are estimates, not Instagram's rules.
Automated DMs work differently. A tool that is connected through Meta's official API sends under Meta's published developer limits, described below, and those limits are counted per Instagram professional account.
Meta's official limits for automated Instagram DMs

Meta's developer documentation lists these limits for apps using the Instagram API with Instagram Login (Instagram Platform overview, Messaging Rate Limits, read 6 November 2026):
- For apps using the Instagram API with Instagram Login (the API SuperProfile uses), Meta counts messaging calls per Instagram professional account and per API
- Send API: 100 calls per second for messages with text, links, reactions and stickers; 10 calls per second for messages with audio or video
- Private Replies API: 750 calls per hour for private replies to comments on posts and Reels; 100 calls per second for private replies to Instagram Live comments
- Conversations API: 2 calls per second
- Meta's docs give no per-hour cap for the Send API and no daily DM number
- Meta's separate Messenger API for Instagram lists 300 calls per second for text messages
For a comment-to-DM automation, the number that matters most is the private-reply limit: Meta lets an app send up to 750 private replies an hour to comments on one account's posts and Reels. Meta can change these limits, so treat them as the current published values, not a promise.
Is “200 DMs per hour” a real Instagram limit?
It is not in Meta's Instagram messaging rate limits. Meta's docs give per-second limits for the Send API and a per-hour limit only for private replies to comments (750 an hour on posts and Reels). If a tool caps itself at 200 an hour, that is the tool's own choice, not a Meta rule.
The 24-hour window and the 7-day rules
Rate limits say how fast; messaging windows say when. Meta's rules:
- Comment to DM: Meta allows one private reply to a comment, sent within 7 days of the comment (during the broadcast for Live); more messages only if the person responds, within 24 hours of their response.
- Ongoing conversation: An app can message a person during Meta's standard messaging window, which for most actions lasts 24 hours after the person's message; after a person's first message from a Click-to-Direct ad it can last up to 7 days, and a human agent can answer within 7 days using Meta's human_agent tag.
So the three “7 days” you may read about are different things: the private reply to a comment, a Click-to-Direct ad conversation, and a human agent's late answer. A normal automated follow-up has 24 hours from the person's last message.
What happens when SuperProfile Auto-DM meets these limits
SuperProfile Auto-DM sends through Meta's official API, so Meta's limits are the ones that apply: Auto-DM sends replies and DMs through Meta's official Instagram Graph API and Facebook Graph API (Messenger), with the account connected by Meta login; no password sharing or browser automation. SuperProfile adds no DM cap of its own on any plan; the free plan sets no cap on contacts or DMs; Meta's messaging limits still apply.
On a post that goes viral, the limit you are most likely to meet is Meta's 750 private replies an hour. When Meta limits how fast an account can send, SuperProfile tells the creator "Instagram allows about 750 comment replies an hour per account. Comments past the limit are not getting a DM"; those comments are not sent a DM later, and sending picks up again as the hour rolls over, with nothing for the creator to fix. In other words, a DM that Meta refuses for speed is not queued and sent later, so a giveaway that pulls thousands of comments in an hour will not DM every commenter.
Two things SuperProfile does on its own side: a comment automation sends the same person its DM at most once in 24 hours, even if they comment several times, so repeat comments do not use up the limit; and public replies under comments are spaced a few seconds apart for each account (3 to 5 seconds) instead of being posted all at once.
How to stay inside the limits
- Expect the hourly ceiling on big posts. If you run a giveaway or a launch that could pass 750 comments an hour, people who comment after the limit is reached that hour will not get the DM. The limit is per account, so more posts at the same time do not help; spreading a launch over several hours or days does.
- Keep people talking inside the window. A follow-up needs the person to reply or tap a button first; after that you have 24 hours from their last message.
- Vary your public replies. Meta can flag the same reply text repeated on many comments as spam, so add several reply variants.
If DMs are not arriving for another reason, see why Instagram Auto-DM is not working.
Frequently asked questions
How many DMs can you send on Instagram per day?
Instagram does not publish a daily number for DMs sent by hand from the app. For automated DMs through Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login, Meta publishes per-account limits instead: 750 private replies an hour to comments on posts and Reels, and 100 text message calls a second.
Is 200 DMs per hour Instagram's limit?
No. That figure is not in Meta's Instagram messaging rate limits. Meta's docs give 750 private replies an hour for comment replies and per-second limits for other DMs.
How long do I have to DM someone who commented?
Meta allows one private reply to a comment within 7 days of the comment. More messages are allowed only after the person responds, within 24 hours of their response.
What happens to Auto-DMs past Meta's limit?
With SuperProfile Auto-DM, comments past Meta's hourly limit do not get a DM, and those DMs are not sent later. Sending picks up again as the hour rolls over.
Does SuperProfile limit how many DMs I can send?
No. SuperProfile sets no DM or contact cap on any plan, including the free plan. Meta's own messaging limits still apply.
