Fake brand collaboration scams on Instagram: how to spot them
A fake brand collaboration is a DM or comment that looks like a sponsorship but ends with you paying money, buying a product, or giving away your login. The single rule that catches most of them: a real brand pays you, and never asks you to pay, share a password or OTP, or log in through a link to collaborate.
What are the common fake collab scams?
| Scam | How it starts | Where it ends |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-to-join ambassador programme | "We love your content! DM us to collab" in your comments, or a DM inviting you to be a brand ambassador | A discount code to buy the product yourself, a "starter kit" or a membership fee. You pay; there is no fee for you. |
| Product fee or shipping fee | A free product offer for a post | You pay shipping, customs or a refundable deposit, and the product never comes, or is worth less than you paid. |
| Phishing collab link | A brand or "Instagram partnership team" sends a link to a collab portal, contract or verification page | A fake login page takes your Instagram password and code, and the account is taken over. |
| Copyright or verification bait | A DM saying your account broke copyright rules or can get a blue tick | The same fake login page, or a fee to "fix" or "verify" the account. |
| Fake payment or overpayment | A generous fee, paid by cheque or transfer before you post | The "payment" is fake or more than agreed, and you're asked to refund the difference before it bounces. |
| Task or investment scam | Small paid tasks such as liking posts, then a Telegram or WhatsApp group | You are asked to invest or prepay to unlock larger payouts. |
| Impersonated real brand | A lookalike handle or a Gmail address using a well-known brand's name | Any of the above, made believable by the brand name. |
What are the red flags of a fake brand deal?
- They ask you to pay anything: product, shipping, deposit, training, membership or fees.
- They ask for your password, OTP or login code, or send a link that opens an Instagram login page.
- The offer has no deliverables, dates or brief, and stays vague after you ask.
- The account is new, has few posts, or its handle is one letter off the real brand's.
- They email from a free address while claiming to be a large company, or won't confirm through the brand's official website.
- They push you off Instagram to Telegram or WhatsApp straight away.
- They pay before the work, pay more than agreed, or ask for part of it back.
- Pressure: "only 2 spots left", "reply in 1 hour".
The US Federal Trade Commission gives the same core rule for job offers: honest employers never ask you to pay to get the job, and a cheque you must partly send back is a fake cheque scam.
How do I check if a brand collaboration is real?
- Find the brand's official website yourself (don't use links from the DM) and check that the handle and email domain match.
- Look at the account: age, post history, tagged posts by other creators, and whether it is the verified or official page.
- Ask for a written brief: deliverables, timeline, usage rights and payment. Real brands and agencies send one.
- Ask for a contract or purchase order from a company email, with the registered company name.
- Search the brand name with "scam" and ask creators it has tagged whether they were paid.
- If any step asks you to pay or log in somewhere, stop.
What should I do if I've been scammed?
- If you gave your password or code: change your password, turn on two-factor authentication, and go to instagram.com/hacked if you can't log in. More in Instagram's hacked accounts help.
- If you paid: contact your bank or UPI app straight away and ask them to stop or reverse the payment.
- In India: report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the 1930 helpline shown on that portal, as early as you can.
- In the US: the US Federal Trade Commission explains how to report fraud and reverse payments.
- On Instagram: report the account and the message, then block it. Warn your followers in a Story if the scammer is using your name.
How Brand Collab handles a likely scam
SuperProfile Brand Collab reads brand DMs on your Instagram and sorts them by fit. When a request asks for payment first, or for a password or OTP, it moves it to Not relevant with a notice: Possible scam: asks for password/OTP or payment first. Nothing automated is sent to that brand. In full, it:
- Reads brand collaboration DMs on your Instagram for the offer: deliverables, budget or commission, who posts, and the brand's niche
- Sorts requests into Most relevant, Not relevant and Waiting for details, against your niches, payment types and rates
- Optional receptionist: if a detail is missing it asks the brand once, follows up once, then says thanks; at most 3 short messages, sent from your account with a delay and during your waking hours, and it stops when you reply
- Stays silent when it isn't sure: if the brand asks about rates, a media kit or a call, makes an agency or programme pitch, writes in another language or looks like a scam, nothing is sent and the question is left for you to answer
- Stops the moment you reply by hand; you always decide and reply yourself
Brand Collab is part of SuperProfile's paid plans, with up to 50 brand requests handled per creator per month. It doesn't decide for you: read the message and the checklist above before you reply.

Frequently asked questions
Are "DM to collab" comments real?
Usually not. Mass comments asking you to DM a page to collab or become an ambassador are a common route to pay-to-join offers, where you end up buying the product. Real brands usually DM or email with a specific brief.
Is a free product for a post a scam?
Not always. A real barter deal sends the product at the brand's cost. If you're asked to pay shipping, a deposit or buy it with a discount code, treat it as a scam.
Why would a brand send me a login link?
A real brand has no reason to. Links that open an Instagram login page or ask for your code are phishing. Log in only through the Instagram app or instagram.com.
Does Instagram DM you about copyright or verification?
Treat DMs claiming to be from Instagram about copyright strikes or verification as suspicious, especially with a link or a fee. Check your account status inside the Instagram app.
Can Brand Collab block scam messages?
It doesn't delete or block anything. A request that asks for payment first, or a password or OTP, is sorted into Not relevant with a possible-scam notice, and nothing automated is sent to that brand.
Where do I report a brand deal scam in India?
On the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in), or by calling 1930. Also tell your bank or UPI app if you paid.
