# Instagram trial reels: who can use them, how to post them and how to schedule them

Trial reels are Instagram Reels that are shown to people who don't follow you first, so you can test an idea before your followers see it. You need a public account that can appear in recommendations, with at least 200 followers on a professional account (1,000 on a personal account). This guide covers posting one in the app, reading its results, sharing it with your followers, and scheduling one ahead of time. Scheduling with SuperProfile needs a paid plan.

## What are Instagram trial reels?
A trial reel is a Reel that Instagram shows to people who don't follow you first. Instagram introduced trial reels in December 2024 so creators could try a new topic or format without worrying about how followers would react ([Instagram for Creators](https://creators.instagram.com/blog/instagram-trial-reels)).
- After you share a trial reel, your followers won't see it in feed or Reels, and it stays off your public profile unless you tap Share to everyone or Instagram shares it automatically under your setting
- You see insights on a trial reel within 24 hours, such as views, likes, comments and shares
- To share it with your followers yourself: open the reel from your profile, tap View insights, then Share to everyone
- If you turn on automatic sharing, Instagram shares the reel when it performs well soon after you publish it, based on signals like views and engagement
- Trial reels are evaluated independently in Instagram's ranking and don't affect your standard reels
Some followers can still come across a trial reel, for example when someone sends it to them in a direct message, on a page for the same audio, or in search engine results ([Instagram Help: About trial reels](https://help.instagram.com/1013292530224018/)).

## Who can use trial reels?
Instagram requires a public account that is eligible to appear in recommendations, with at least 200 followers for a professional (business or creator) account or 1,000 followers for a personal account ([Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/1013292530224018/)).
So a creator or business account needs 200 followers, not 1,000; the 1,000 figure applies to personal accounts. If your account can't appear in recommendations, Instagram removes trial reels until it can again. To check, open **Settings** and then **Account Status** in the Instagram app.

## How do I post a trial reel in the Instagram app?

1. Record or upload a new Reel as usual. Use new content: Instagram says a trial reel may get limited reach if it detects you've shared the same content before.
2. Before you share it, tap **Trial**.
3. Optional: tap **Trial settings** under Trial and turn on **Share to everyone automatically** if you want Instagram to share it with your followers when it performs well.
4. Tap **Next**, then **Share**.
Steps from [Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/1013292530224018/), read on 15 October 2026. Instagram says the automatic setting then applies to your future trial reels until you change it.

## How do I know when to share a trial reel?
Instagram shows insights on a trial reel within about 24 hours, including views, likes, comments and shares ([Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/1013292530224018/)). Instagram also compares the trial with your previous trials ([Instagram for Creators](https://creators.instagram.com/blog/instagram-trial-reels)).
There is no universal number of views to aim for. Compare a trial against your own earlier trials and your usual Reels: if it does better than they did, share it with your followers. Trial reels can take longer to get views, because they go to people who don't follow you yet.

## How do I share a trial reel with my followers?

1. Go to your Instagram profile and open your reels.
2. Tap the trial reel you want to share.
3. Tap **View insights**.
4. Tap **Share to everyone**.
The reel then shows on your profile grid and Reels tab, and your followers may see it in their feed and Reels. Trial reels can take longer to get views because they go to people who don't follow you yet.

## Can I schedule a trial reel?
Instagram's app has its own scheduling for posts and Reels where it's available to you; check whether the Trial option shows when you schedule there. You can also use a scheduler that supports trial reels, such as the [SuperProfile Instagram scheduler](https://superprofile.bio/products/instagram-scheduler), which publishes through Meta's official API and needs a paid plan.

Sample data. Under Reel options, tick Trial reel and choose how it is shared with your followers; the preview notes that a trial reel is shown to non-followers first.

1. [Create a free SuperProfile account](https://superprofile.bio/signup), choose a paid plan, open **Schedule** and connect your Instagram professional account.
2. Select **New post**, choose **Reel** and upload the video.
3. Write the caption, then under **Reel options** tick **Trial reel**.
4. Choose **I'll share it to followers myself** or **Share automatically if it performs well**.
5. Pick the date, time and time zone, then schedule it.
Trial reels work for Instagram Reels only, not Stories, photos, carousels, Facebook Page or LinkedIn posts. An AI assistant can do the same: an AI assistant can schedule a trial reel through the MCP server by setting reel.trial to MANUAL or SS_PERFORMANCE on prepare_scheduled_post (Reels only). See [scheduling from Claude or ChatGPT](https://superprofile.bio/mcp/instagram-scheduler).

## Why can't I use trial reels?
- **Too few followers:** a professional account needs at least 200 followers and a personal account at least 1,000.
- **Private account:** trial reels need a public account.
- **Not eligible for recommendations:** if Account Status shows your account can't appear in recommendations, Instagram removes trial reels until it can again.
- **A scheduled trial reel failed:** SuperProfile marks the post as failed and says the account doesn't qualify for trial reels yet. Nothing is reposted for you: if you want, duplicate the post, turn off Trial reel and schedule it as a normal Reel.

## Frequently asked questions

Only on a personal account. Instagram asks for at least 200 followers on a professional (creator or business) account, and the account must be public.

### Do followers see trial reels?
Not in their feed or Reels tab, and the trial reel stays off your public profile unless you tap Share to everyone or Instagram shares it automatically under your setting. Some followers may still see it if someone sends it to them, on a page for the same audio, or in search engine results.

### How long until I see how a trial reel is doing?
Instagram shows insights within about 24 hours. If you turned on automatic sharing, Instagram shares the reel when it performs well soon after you publish it, based on signals like views and engagement.

### Do trial reels hurt my other reels?
Instagram says trial reels are evaluated independently in its ranking and don't affect the performance or ranking of your standard reels.

### Can I schedule Instagram trial reels?
Yes. Check whether Instagram's own scheduling shows the Trial option for you, or use a scheduler that supports trial reels: in SuperProfile (paid plans), tick Trial reel under Reel options and choose how it is shared with your followers.

### Can I turn a trial reel into a normal reel later?
Yes. Open it from your profile, tap View insights and then Share to everyone. It then shows on your grid and Reels tab.
