# Instagram Hidden Words not working? Causes and fixes

Hidden Words is often working when it looks like it isn't: a hidden comment stays visible to the person who wrote it, you can still open it, and it still counts in the comment total. When spam really does get through, it is because the list matches the words you typed, so new spellings, other scripts and links slip past; the fixes below cover both cases.

## First, is it actually failing?
Two of the most common reports are not failures:
- **"I can still see the comment."** A hidden comment stays visible to the person who wrote it, and you can still open it under View hidden comments. What your followers see can differ from what you see, so check from a second account, or logged out.
- **"The comment count didn't go down."** Instagram counts hidden comments in the total.

## Why is Hidden Words not hiding comments?
| Cause | What is happening | Fix |

| 1. The list wasn't saved | Entries must be separated by commas and submitted. A paste with line breaks or a closed screen can lose them. | Reopen Manage custom words and phrases and check your entries are there. |
| 2. The built-in filter is off | Hide unwanted comments is on by default, but it can be switched off. | Turn it back on in Hidden Words. |
| 3. It's not your post | The custom list works on comments on posts you share and on your message requests. | On other people's posts, report or ask the owner to hide it. |
| 4. A disguised spelling | Instagram hides common misspellings of your words, but spaced-out letters, dots, numbers for letters or styled Unicode letters can still pass. | Add the exact variant you saw, copied from the comment. |
| 5. Another script or language | "followers badhao" and "फॉलोअर्स बढ़ाओ" are different strings. | Add Hindi words in Roman and Devanagari, and any regional language your audience writes in. |
| 6. A link | Each scam link is different, and you can only list fragments. | List the shorteners you keep seeing, or use a tool with a rule for links. |

| 10. Web and app differ | Instagram says filtering options can vary on web and aren't in every experience. | Set it up in an updated Instagram app on your phone. |

## How do I test Hidden Words properly?

1. Add a test phrase that nobody would write by accident, for example `pineapple test 42`.
2. From a second account, comment that phrase on one of your posts and on one of your Reels.
3. Check from a third account, or a logged-out browser, whether the comment shows.
4. On your own post, look for it under **View hidden comments**.
5. Remove the test phrase when you are done.
If the test phrase is hidden but spam isn't, the filter works and the spam is a variant your list doesn't contain. That is causes 4 to 8.

## What else can I do inside Instagram?
- **Limit who can comment.** In Settings, under How others can interact with you, choose Comments and allow people you follow, your followers, or both. You can also turn off comments on a post, Reel or Story.
- **Hide by hand.** Tap Hide under a comment on your post. Unhide it later from View hidden comments.
- **Turn on Hide unwanted message requests** if the spam is in DM requests rather than comments.

Instagram's help page describes custom words as working on comments on posts you share, without listing Reels separately. Run the test above on a Reel to check your own account.

### Is Hidden Words case sensitive?
Instagram doesn't document it. Add the lowercase form, then test a capitalised version from a second account.

### Why does spam with my blocked word still appear?
Usually it is a variant: spaces between letters, a number for a letter, styled Unicode letters or another script. Copy the exact text from the comment into your list.

### Can Hidden Words block comments with links?
Only if you list a fragment of the link, such as a shortener. To catch any comment with a web address, use a moderation tool with a links rule, such as SuperProfile comment moderation.

### Does Hidden Words hide comments on my ads?
