# How to automate comments on Instagram

To automate comments on Instagram, connect your professional account to an Auto-DM tool that uses Meta's official API, pick a post or Reel, set the keyword people should comment, and write the public reply and the DM that go out when someone comments it. This guide walks through each step in SuperProfile with screenshots from the builder, and the rules Meta sets for automated replies.

## What does it mean to automate comments on Instagram?
People use the phrase for four different things, and only three of them are allowed:
| What you want | What it is called | Allowed? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Answer people who comment on your post | Public comment reply (auto-reply) | Yes, through Meta's official API |
| Send a link or freebie to people who comment a keyword | Comment-to-DM, a private reply | Yes, within Meta's messaging rules |
| Hide spam, links and abuse in your comments | Comment moderation | Yes, see [comment moderation](https://superprofile.bio/auto-dm/use-cases/comment-moderation) |
| Post comments on other people's posts or hashtags | Auto-commenting bots | No. Instagram's Terms of Use forbid "accessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission" ([Instagram Terms of Use](https://help.instagram.com/581066165581870)), and many tools that do this ask for your password or session cookies |
The rest of this guide is about the first two: replying to comments on your own posts and sending a DM to people who comment. On SuperProfile they are one automation, so the public reply and the DM go out together. SuperProfile sends replies and DMs through Meta's official Instagram Graph API, with the account connected by Meta login. There is no password sharing or browser automation.

## What do you need before you start?

- **A professional account.** Auto-DM works with Instagram Creator and Business (professional) accounts. If an account is switched back to personal, Instagram stops letting tools send its DMs. Not sure which you have? See [how to switch to a professional account](https://superprofile.bio/guides/instagram-professional-account).
- **Message access for connected tools.** In Instagram, turn on Allow access to messages under Message controls, Connected tools ([Meta docs](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/messenger-platform/instagram/get-started)).
- **A keyword and a reason to comment it.** A line in your caption such as "Comment GUIDE and I will send it" gives people a reason to comment.
- **A SuperProfile account.** On the free plan: Auto-DM on Instagram posts and Reels, one keyword per automation, text-and-button DMs that end with a short "Sent via" line naming SuperProfile's Instagram account; the free plan sets no cap on contacts or DMs; Meta's messaging limits still apply. Auto-DM on Stories and Lives, ask-to-follow, email collection and follow-ups need a paid plan. See [superprofile.bio](https://superprofile.bio/) for plans.

## How do you automate comments on Instagram, step by step?

1. Open **AutoDM** in your SuperProfile dashboard and connect your Instagram account with Meta login.
2. Tap **Create Automation**, choose **Instagram**, then pick the trigger **Comments on your Post or Reel**.
3. In step 1 of 3, choose **Specific Post/Reel** and select the post people will comment on.
4. In step 2 of 3, keep **Specific keyword**, type a keyword such as GUIDE and tap Add. Switch on **Auto-Reply to comments on the post** if you also want a public reply under the comment.
5. In step 3 of 3, write the DM people receive and add a button that opens your link or product.
6. Check the preview on the review screen, then tap **Confirm & launch**.
7. Test it by commenting the keyword from a second account, then tell your audience what to comment, for example "Comment GUIDE" in the caption or on screen.
The next sections show each screen. The handle and posts in the screenshots are masked sample data.

## How do you choose the trigger and the post?
After you choose Instagram, the builder asks what should start the automation. For comments, pick **Comments on your Post or Reel**. The same list also starts an automation from a DM, a Story reply, a Live comment or a DM about your post; On SuperProfile the triggers are comments on Reels and posts, Story replies, Live comments and direct messages.

Sample data. The first screen of the builder: pick what starts the automation. Comments on your Post or Reel is the one this guide uses.
Step 1 of 3 then asks which posts the comment must be on: **Specific Post/Reel**, **Any Post/Reel** or **Next Post/Reel**. On the free plan an automation runs on one specific post or Reel; any-comment and all-posts triggers are paid features. Pick the Reel you just posted or the post people keep commenting on.
![Step 1 of 3 in the automation builder: choose Specific Post/Reel, Any Post/Reel or Next Post/Reel, then pick a post](https://superprofile.bio/seo-img/ig-comment-auto-2-post.webp)

Sample data. Post thumbnails are masked. Choose the post first; Next stays disabled until you do.

## How do you set the keyword and the public reply?
Step 2 of 3 is where the comment is matched. Choose **Specific keyword** and add the word or words people should comment. The builder says it plainly: keywords are not case-sensitive, and an automation triggers only on exact keyword matches, so the keyword "ai" matches "ai" but not "pain". One keyword is enough for a first automation.
Below the keyword is the switch **Auto-Reply to comments on the post**. Turn it on and the builder asks for three replies, each up to 140 characters. SuperProfile then posts up to three rotating public comment replies under matching comments, in a random order so your replies do not all read the same. The builder pre-fills three examples ("Thanks! Please see DMs.", "Sent you a message! Check it out!", "Nice! Check your DMs!") that you can edit, and warns that automating comment replies comes with risk, so vary the wording. On paid plans, **Fill variations from reply 1** asks the AI to reword your first reply into the other two.
![Step 2 of 3: the keyword GUIDE added, Also reply without your keywords off, and Auto-Reply to comments with 3 replies](https://superprofile.bio/seo-img/ig-comment-auto-3-keyword-reply.webp)

Sample data. A keyword chip, the AI intent toggle (off) and the three rotating public replies the builder pre-fills; edit them before you launch.

## How do you write the DM?
Step 3 of 3 is the message people receive in their inbox. Write the text, choose the DM type, and add a button that opens your link or product. Depending on your plan you can send text, buttons, images, video, audio, PDFs or cards. The builder starts with a friendly default ("Appreciate your comment ... As promised, here's the link for you") that you should rewrite in your own voice; [six copy-paste templates](https://superprofile.bio/guides/comment-to-get-link-dm-template) are ready if you want a start.
Two options sit above the DM text and need a paid plan: asking people to follow you first, and asking them to share an email. Track button clicks is on by default, so you can see how many people tap your buttons; turn it off for affiliate links.
![Step 3 of 3: time delay, follow and email DM options, and the primary DM text with Add a button and Track button clicks](https://superprofile.bio/seo-img/ig-comment-auto-4-dm.webp)

Sample data. The DM step: text, an Add a button control for your link, and the Track button clicks switch, which is on by default.

## What does the review screen show?
Before anything goes live, the last step is a review. The Review step shows a phone preview of what your follower sees before you switch the automation on: their comment, your public reply and the DM with its buttons. It also lists the post, the keyword and the reply and DM in order. Read it as your follower would. When it looks right, tap **Confirm & launch**.
![Review screen with a phone preview of the comment, the public reply Thanks! Please see DMs, and the DM, before Confirm and launch](https://superprofile.bio/seo-img/ig-comment-auto-5-review.webp)

Sample data. The commenter in the preview is the builder's own sample, not a real account. Check the order: comment, public reply, DM.

## What happens when someone comments your keyword?
- The comment is matched against your keyword on the post you chose.
- If you turned replies on, one of your rotating public replies is posted under the comment.
- The commenter gets your DM, normally with a button.
Meta sets the limits for every tool ([Meta private replies docs](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/private-replies), read 31 October 2026). One private reply is allowed per comment, within 7 days of the comment (during the broadcast for a Live). More messages are allowed only if the person responds, within 24 hours of their response. So the first DM is a private reply to the comment. On comment and Live triggers, follow-ups need the person to respond first, so the automation opens with a message and a button (the default button reads "Send me the link"), and the tap is that response. Follow-ups then run within 23 hours of the person's message, inside Meta's messaging window.
Delivery is never guaranteed: Meta's rules, the person's settings and your account's connection all decide whether a DM arrives. If DMs stop going out, see [why Instagram Auto-DM is not working](https://superprofile.bio/guides/instagram-auto-dm-not-working).

## Can you reply to comments that do not contain your keyword?
Keyword matching misses typos, other languages and comments such as "pls send". On paid plans you can turn on “Also reply without your keywords” per automation and describe the comment in plain words (for example “asks for the link”). Comments with no keyword, such as typos, other languages, Hinglish or “pls send”, are read by AI and the DM goes out only when it is confident. Details and a live test are on [Auto DM without a keyword](https://superprofile.bio/auto-dm/use-cases/reply-without-keyword). Hiding the comments you do not want to answer is a separate tool: [hide spam comments on Instagram automatically](https://superprofile.bio/guides/hide-spam-comments-instagram).

## Does Instagram have a free built-in way to automate comments?
Partly. Meta's Help Center lists a Business Suite automation, "Comment to message: Reply to a comment that contains specific hashtags", and notes that it is "only available on Meta Business Suite desktop" ([Meta Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/395965998733706/), read 31 October 2026). Meta also says some automations may not be available depending on the channels you have connected, so check what your own account shows. Instagram's in-app tools such as suggested questions and Hidden Words work on chats and on hiding comments, not on keyword replies to a Reel.
If you want a keyword you choose on a specific Reel, a public reply under the comment and a DM with a button and your own checkout, connect an API-connected tool. Both SuperProfile and ManyChat use Meta's official Instagram API. SuperProfile Auto-DM keeps the DM, your checkout and your link-in-bio in one place; ManyChat is stronger when the same funnel also runs on WhatsApp, TikTok or Telegram. See [SuperProfile vs ManyChat](https://superprofile.bio/compare/manychat). For the full recipe and a definition, read [Instagram comment automation](https://superprofile.bio/auto-dm/use-cases/comment-to-dm); for DMs and Stories, [how to set auto reply on Instagram](https://superprofile.bio/guides/instagram-auto-reply).

## Can an AI assistant set this up for you?
Yes. Connect the SuperProfile MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant and ask it to draft the automation. A new automation starts as a draft you review before it goes live. See [Instagram Auto-DM with Claude or ChatGPT](https://superprofile.bio/mcp/instagram-auto-dm).

## Instagram par comments automate kaise karein?
Apna professional account SuperProfile AutoDM se Meta login ke saath connect kijiye, Create Automation mein Comments on your Post or Reel chuniye, post select kijiye, ek keyword (jaise GUIDE) add kijiye, aur public reply aur DM likhiye. Jab koi us keyword ke saath comment karta hai, tab Meta ke rules ke andar usko DM jaa sakta hai.
Meta ke rules yaad rakhiye: ek comment par sirf ek private reply, wo bhi comment ke 7 din ke andar. Dusre logon ke posts par automatic comment karne wale bots Instagram ke Terms ke khilaaf hain, unse door rahiye.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I automate comments on Instagram?
Connect your professional Instagram account to an Auto-DM tool that uses Meta's official API, create an automation for a post or Reel, set a keyword, turn on public comment replies if you want them, write the DM and launch it. When someone comments the keyword, the reply and the DM go out within Meta's rules.

### Can I auto reply to Instagram comments for free?
On SuperProfile's free plan you can run Auto-DM on Instagram posts and Reels with one keyword and text-and-button DMs; the free plan sets no cap on contacts or DMs, though Meta's messaging limits still apply. Stories, Lives, any-comment triggers, ask-to-follow, email collection and follow-ups need a paid plan.

### Can I automate comments on other people's posts?
No. Instagram's Terms of Use forbid accessing or collecting information in an automated way without Instagram's express permission, and tools that comment for you often need your password or session cookies. Official tools only answer people who interact with your own account.

### Is automating Instagram comments safe for my account?
Replies and DMs sent through Meta's official API are allowed, but the rules still apply: one private reply per comment within 7 days, follow-ups only after the person responds, and varied public replies. Nothing guarantees an account will never be restricted.

### Do I need a professional account?
Yes. Auto-DM works with Instagram Creator and Business accounts. If an account is switched back to personal, Instagram stops letting tools send its DMs.

### How long after a comment can the DM be sent?
Meta allows one private reply to a comment within 7 days of the comment; for a Live, only during the broadcast. Follow-up messages are possible only if the person responds, and within 24 hours of the response.

### Why did my automation not reply to a comment?
Common causes: the comment is on a different post, the keyword does not match exactly, the account is not professional or its connection needs renewing, or Meta's windows have passed. See the Auto-DM not working guide for the checklist.
