# DM full form on Instagram: what DM means and how to use it

DM stands for **Direct Message**. On Instagram, a DM is a private message to one person or a small group. It doesn't show on your profile, in the feed or in search. Instagram calls the feature Messages. *We build SuperProfile, a tool that sends Instagram DMs automatically; it comes up once, near the end.*

## What is the full form of DM on Instagram?
The full form of DM is **Direct Message**. When someone writes "DM me" or "check your DMs", they mean a private message on Instagram, not a comment or a post. (Outside social media, DM has other meanings: in India it often stands for District Magistrate.)
DM का मतलब है Direct Message (डायरेक्ट मैसेज), यानी Instagram पर एक private message.

## Where are DMs on Instagram?
In the Instagram app, tap **Messages** to open your chats. On a computer, open instagram.com and click Messages. The exact position of the button can differ by app version.
Messages from people you don't follow can wait in your **Message Requests** folder until you accept them. Per Instagram's [Help Center](https://help.instagram.com/585369912141614) (read 16 October 2026), you choose who can send you requests in **Settings**, **Messages and story replies**, **Message controls**.

## How do I send a DM on Instagram?

1. Open Messages in the Instagram app.
2. Tap the compose (new message) button.
3. Choose the person, or several people for a group chat.
4. Type your message, or add a photo, video or voice note, and tap Send.
You can also open someone's profile and tap **Message**. If they don't follow you, your DM may arrive as a message request, and Instagram lets you send only text until they accept it.

## How do I check DMs I may have missed?
Look in three places: your chats, **Requests**, and the hidden **Spam** folder inside Requests, where Instagram puts requests it thinks are offensive or spam (with no notification). Creator and Business accounts also split chats into **Primary** and **General** tabs.
Our [Instagram messages guide](https://superprofile.bio/guides/instagram-messages) covers every folder, unsend, edit, disappearing messages and what to do when a message isn't showing.

## What do "DM me", "DM for price" and "DM for collab" mean?
| Phrase | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| DM me | Send me a private message. |
| Check your DMs | I've sent you a message. If you don't see it, check Requests. |
| DM for price | The seller shares the price privately instead of in the post. |
| DM for collab / DM for promotion | Brands can message about paid work. Read [how to reply to brand DMs](https://superprofile.bio/guides/reply-to-brand-collaboration-dms) and [how to spot fake brand deals](https://superprofile.bio/guides/fake-brand-collaboration-scams). |
| Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you | Commenting a word gets you a private message, often sent automatically. |
If your comments fill up with "price?", a [price DM template](https://superprofile.bio/guides/price-dm-template) gives you one clear reply to send each time.

## Is a comment or a Story reply a DM?
A comment under a post is public. A **Story reply** is private and arrives in your messages like a DM. Instagram also has Story comments, which anyone who can see the Story can read.
| Type | Who can see it | Where it lands |
| --- | --- | --- |
| DM | Only the people in the chat | Messages (or Requests) |
| Story reply | Only you and the creator | Messages |
| Comment / Story comment | Anyone who can see the post or Story | Under the post or Story |

## Can Instagram DMs be sent automatically?
Yes, for Creator and Business accounts, through Meta's messaging API, and Meta's rules shape what any tool can do. A business can send one private reply to a comment within 7 days; it can send more only if the person responds, within 24 hours. When someone messages first, the standard window to reply is 24 hours after their message. Instagram's [Help Center](https://help.instagram.com/655277382759165) (read 16 October 2026) says automated chats must tell you you're talking to one where the law requires it, at the start, after a long gap, and when a human hands back to the automation.
We build SuperProfile, and its [Auto-DM](https://superprofile.bio/auto-dm) works within those rules: it answers comments on posts and Reels with the message you set, and on paid plans also Story replies and incoming DMs. Read the [Instagram DM automation guide](https://superprofile.bio/instagram-dm-automation) for how it fits your account.
